Overhead Monitoring of Medium-Voltage Lines

It is now easily possible to monitor critical overhead circuits without removing power to install the equipment.  This solution is targeted at line voltages at 34.5KV and lower.  The benefits of this solution are immediate:

Design:  The same equipment can be used on 34.5KV as well as 2650V lines, removing the time required to specify different equipment for different line levels.

Installation:  No service interruption to customers; use hotstick or hand to mount device on primary line; installs in less than 15 minutes on average (per three-phase node).

bullet

Operation:  Monitor real-time load and harmonic content; intrinsically isolated from lightning strikes (higher reliability of the monitoring equipment).

  1. Overhead Optical CT Clamp Assemblies (Quantity 3)
  2. Pole-Mounted Electro-Optic Interface

Services Required

  1. 120V Standard North American Plug Configuration (e.g., from Street Lighting Circuit)
  2. TCP/IP Communications on the Pole, e.g., Fiber Optic, Broadband over Power Line, etc.

Optical CT Clamp Installation

Installation of the Optical CT Clamp can be accomplished using a hot stick, or can be attached by hand, depending upon the experience of the lineman in working at the different voltages or the particular requirements of the utility.

Pole-Mounted Electro-Optic Interface

Installation of the electro-optic interface is accomplished using simple lag bolts.
